Earlier this year I had the absolute pleasure of working alongside Emma Brooks Make Up, Beautiful Hair 4 Weddings and Wild Poppies again for our project.  Whenever we get together for these projects we always come up with something very special and this time was no different as we were blessed to have been granted permission to shoot at Hedingham Castle the current Heritage Essex Wedding Venue of the Year for 2017-2018.

Dunkirk, France with my DJI Mavic Air

So for a while now I've fancied purchasing a DJI drone, originally I had my eyes on the DJI Spark until I saw that the DJI Mavic Air was being released.  After watching a few videos on youtube I was sold but the problem was I just had to wait for the DJI Mavic Air Fly More Combo - Flame Red stock to arrive.  I had our next World War adventure to France and Belgium coming up and I was desperate to take it with me, with only 2 days to go it arrived and all I had time to do was charge it up and complete the firmware updates.

The shipwrecks of Dunkirk were one of the locations we were visiting this time around and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take it out for my first flight as the beaches in Dunkirk are vast and pretty much empty at the time we were there to witness the wrecks magically appear from the sea.  I'D RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WITH AN INTEREST IN THE WAR YOU MUST VISIT THESE WRECKS.

My maiden flight was scary I'll be honest, especially as I was learning whilst flying, but after some initial problems not being able to see the screen due to the sunlight and the drone flying out to sea a couple of times I was loving every second of it.  

I produced a video of the footage I shot below which you can watch.  Since the first flight I've got to understand the Mavic Air a lot more and I'm just looking forward to many more flying hours with this awesome piece of kit.

Here's my first flight with my new DJI Mavic Air, exploring the shipwrecks from Operation Dynamo focussing mainly on the Crested Eagle and the Devonia shipwrecks on the Dunkirk beaches between Leffrinckoucke and Bray Dunes.

Essex Wedding Photographer of the Year 2017-2018 Winner | gavin conlan photography Ltd

This past Thursday during the Essex Wedding Awards at Orsett Hall Hotel it was announced that I won my category of "ESSEX WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2017-2018".  

I was so honoured to have won and when my name was called out I'll admit I did get a little too excited by high 5'ing everyone on my table before collecting my trophy - you have to milk the moment though right?? What made the night even better was that my one of wedding clients Kayleigh and Tom also won the most romantic couple of Essex trophy... Other winners from my table were Wedding Entertainment (Live Act) of the Year - Essence Duo, Wedding Dress Retailer of the Year - Laceys Bridal Boutique as well as Charlotte from the beautiful Greenwoods Hotel & Spa who sponsored the most romantic couple in Essex category.
