"My thoughts behind this journal (BLOG) is to post a more in-depth selection of photographs from each shoot I complete, both personal and client work.  My Facebook business page ( currently contains TEASER images but now they’ll link directly back to my journal to showcase the photo shoot in full, I’m aiming is post at least once or twice a week".

My Story

I was born, raised and educated in Dagenham Essex and lived there until the summer of 2002 when family circumstances lead me to move to Halstead, Essex.  At the time I had no idea of what Halstead was like and to be honest my biggest concern was going from living 5 minutes to over an hour away from my friends.

Looking back - 2002 was a momentous year of change not only had I moved to Halstead but in December of that year I took my very first photograph.  My friends and I had booked flights to go to New York for a weekend and in celebration I decided to buy my first digital camera, a £30 bargain from Argos.  I came back from NYC with 645 images and the rest they say is history.

It felt so natural taking photographs and from that moment on I was hooked, I photographed everything that inspired me, I started to understand light, learnt different camera techniques and took the first steps in mastering my post processing skills.  Within a year I had invested heavily in the Nikon D70 DSLR (I loved that camera) this camera helped to evolve my love of photography into an obsession with photography and for the first time in my life I knew I’d found the career I wanted for the rest of my life.

Luckily for me my obsession was fuelled by working as a full time photographer for the British Government from 2003 until early 2013, I was absolutely blessed with amazing assignments that took me all over the world working with many different cultures.  As my photography career was taking off I was really focussed on my education, I found a photography mentor and invested heavily into workshops in England, Italy and Japan developing my style and growing not only as a photographer but as a person too.

My photography journey has given me some amazing friendships not only with fellow photographers but with my clients too and to think this all started with that £30 purchase from Argos is crazy.  My advice to you is to always follow your dreams and never give up in the pursuit of happiness, there will always be challenges and worries along the way but we mustn't give up on our dreams.  We only get one chance at life so we've got to make the most of it and I for one feel very fortunate to have found photography.

Fast forward to April 2013 when I finally plucked up the courage to take the giant "leap of faith" I gave up security of my day job to take my Wedding and Portrait Business full time.

Finally after years of talking about it gavin conlan photography Ltd was born on the 11th April 2013, this exciting new chapter in my life has led me to undertake photo shoots in Italy, France, Belgium, Malaysia and Hong Kong for which I feel truly honoured.

All the best,
